Steamed Prawns In Mustard, Poppy Seed Sauce


  • 15-18 large/extra large/jumbo sized fresh shrimp
  • 1/2 + 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 4 tablespoon mustard seeds (pref. yellow mustard seeds or a combination of both)
  • 1/4 teaspoon white peppercorn (use black if white is not available) – adds a pleasant warmth
  • 3 tablespoon white poppy seeds
  • 6 hot chili pepper- like thai bird, (or to taste) + more for garnish
  • 1-2 tablespoon yogurt, drained and whisked or cream of coconut (optional, if you want a bit more sauce and it also balances out the taste)
  • 5 tablespoon pure mustard oil
  • 3/4 cup fresh or frozen grated coconut (unsweetened)
  • a pinch of sugar (just to balance the taste and it won’t make the curry sweet)
  • salt to taste
