Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup dried cranberries (optional)
  • 8 dried apple slices (optional)
  • 1 pound apples, peeled, cored, and thickly sliced
  • 1 pound plums, unpeeled, halved, pitted, and thickly sliced
  • 2 1/2 cups red wine
  • 1 cup superfine sugar (or blitz some granulated sugar in a blender or food processor until finely ground but not powdery)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries (in a pinch, frozen blackberries will do)
  • 1/3 cup crème de cassis, plus more for drizzling (optional)
  • 1 pound fine-grained white bread, such as a pullman loaf, sliced 1/2- to 3/4-inch thick, crusts trimmed
  • whipped cream or crème fraîche, for serving
