  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (about 5 ounces) all purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cup (about 5 ounces) cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (about 4 ounces) buttermilk
  • 1 1/4 cup (10 ounces) hot water
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 cup (about 7 ounces) sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar or juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • crushed peanut brittle or honey roasted peanuts (optional)
