  • 1 1/2 tablespoons finely grated orange zest
  • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons grand marnier or cointreau (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 oranges, scrubbed with a vegetable brush
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar for coating
