  • 1 tbs. light corn syrup
  • pinch table salt
  • 1-1/2 oz. (1/2 cup) unsweetened natural cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 6 oz. (1-1/2 cups) cake flour
  • 3/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. table salt
  • 4 oz. (8 tbs.) slightly softened unsalted butter, cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten and at room temperature
  • easy bittersweet chocolate shards, for garnish (optional)
