  • 1 cup milk, scalded and then cooled
  • 1 tablespoon barley malt syrup
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt (fine grained)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut in pieces and softened
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten with 2 tablespoons milk
